Summer School

The boys started ESY this week -- that stands for Extended School Year, for those who don't live in the "children with special needs world".  In basic terms, it's a regular school routine in the summer for kids in the special needs program, who risk losing skills that were hard won by taking three months off.  Last year we respectfully declined ESY, since we were going to Courage Center  for speech therapy and continuing to have ABA therapy around 6 hours a day at home.  There are only so many hours in the day.  This year, partly in anticipation of starting kindergarten in the fall, we decided to continue their regular school routine throughout the summer as much as we could.

Unfortunately that is only 3 days a week, for 2 hours.  And only for the month of July.  But it is a routine, and it's better than nothing.

And they do love going to school!

AJ is fascinated with the school bus door and tries to close it before he gets in.  He knows the bus driver won't let him play with the handle once he's inside the bus so he works on it before he climbs on.

Zack brings a butterfly chewy to school to disuade him from chewing on other kids, or the seat belt buckles.  It is only minimally successful, at least in regard to the seat belt buckles.

Oh, I hope and pray that kindergarten excites them as much as preschool does.  Our Early Childhood Special Education has been the best thing for them and they love it so much.  I hope they show as much enthusiasm for the bus this fall when it's taking them to Rahn instead of the preschool.....

  1. So Cute! I love AJ saying 'bye' at the end. And good job on the video - I don't know how to post it without help.
